Week 9 Objectives

By the end of Week 9, students will have:
  • been introduced to the topics of Light, and Texture
  • filled K-W-T-K Charts for Light & Texture before each lesson
  • watched videos that illustrate the topics of Light & Texture
  • developed skills of Observation, Research, and Critical Thinking
  • listened to a podcast about Texture
  • completed a cloze exercise by listening to the podcast
  • discussed about different kinds of lightning and different types of textures
  • read about the uses of light and texture in Architecture and Urban Design
  • created a page dedicated to Light in their wikispaces
  • created a page dedicated to Texture in their wikispaces
  • learned new words related to Light & Texture
  • added new words to the glossary in Moodle
  • discussed guidelines and grading criteria for Final Project with the teacher

Week 9 Lesson Plan:


Introduction to the Unit Light & Texture (Group Work):

  • Have you ever thought about the effects that light and texture can produce in the perception people have of a place?
  • Did you know you can create a series of sensations and moods of your choice by integrating the concepts of color, light and texture to your designs and plans?
  • Do you think light and texture can make a difference in any room setting or in any public place as well? How is that? Give examples...

Day 1: Light

1. Introduction to the unit (Individual work):

  • Complete the "Know-Want-To-Know" Chart below
  • Create a page for the topic of Light in your wikispace, and add the chart with your answers to that page.

2. Observation, Research, and Critical Thinking (Individual & F2F/Pair work):

  • Think about the illumination system of your house, classroom, office, street, avenue, square, neighborhood, favorite night club, restaurant, or elsewhere for a few minutes. What is it like? What especial characteristics does it have? (Discuss with a classmate)
  • Do the General Electric Activity
  • Compare results with a student sitting next to you.
  • Do you think Lighting can make a big difference in how you feel about a certain place?.
  • Read Interesting facts about Light
  • Browse this site about The Light you see
  • Try the Glossary by General Electric
  • Try the Glossary of Lighting Terms by Pegasus Associates Lighting
  • Search the content and vocabulary items in the two glossaries, and add new words to the glossary in Moodle (min.3 each one)

3. Reading (F2F/Pair work):



  • Read the following texts..
  • Pay attention to the content in those readings and concentrate on the information that interest you the most
  • Take notes while reading the texts write.jpg

  • After reading the texts, go back to the K-W-T-K Chart to check if you have learned, through the reading, any of the aspects you wanted to learn.
  • Complete a second version (V2) of your K-W-T-K Chart with what you now know about Light.
  • Add Version 2 of your KWTK Chart to the page of Light in your wikispace. (Reading Task 2/ 4.5 pts)


Day 2: Texture


To close last class discussion and start today's, watch the following movie clip from "The Lakehouse" with Sandra Bullok and Keanu Reeves where he (Alex) and Christopher Plummer as Architect Simon J. Wyler are having a conversation. Try to understand what it is that they are talking about....and have a Group Discussion.




4. Introduction to the unit (Individual work):

  • Watch the video "Intense Textures" taken from Youtube.
  • See how texture has been used in different places and structures...
  • Complete a new "Know-Want-To-Know" Chart about Texture
  • Create a page for the topic of Texture in your wikispace, and add the K-W-T-K chart to that page.



5. Explore The Artist's ToolKit Encyclopedia and other sites to learn about:

Note:
  1. Concentrate while doing the activities above and also while listening to the podcast below.
  2. Open a word document to take notes and later add it to the corresponding forum in Moodle.
  3. Do not forget to add new words to our Glossary in Moodle.

6. Listening 2 and note-taking (3pts):

  • Listen to a podcast on Texture by Professor Carlos Torrealba .
  • Click on his photograph OR on the speaker's icon below.

  • In the same word document continue taking notes on the content of the podcast as you listen to Prof. Carlos Torrealba from USB Language Department speak.
  • In your word document, answer the following questions appart from your notes:
    • How is texture defined in the text?
    • What is it that texture describes of an object?
    • How many types of texture are mentioned in this podcast?
    • Is there any part/sentence/word you do not understand?
  • Save the word document with your notes and answers to the four questions
  • File the document in the corresponding Forum in Moodle (week 9) "Texture: Note-Taking"

7. Texture Gap-Fill (Individual work):

  • Do the following exercise in Moodle "Texture Cloze Exercise"
  • Or Click here to go to straight to the exercise
  • Add your texture gap-fill score to the Texture page in your wiki.
  • Make a screenshot of your results/score in the Gap-fill and post it to the texture page in your wiki Listening 2 (3 pts)

After having searched, read and discussed about light and texture,

  • Figure out what it is that it says in three (3) of the nine (9) text slides that appear in the video. (Only 3/9)
  • Write a script for 3 slides, and post them in your "Texture" wiki page
